Title

PROFILE OF HOSPITALIZACION IN THE RHEUMATOLOGY SERVICE OF WALTER CANTIDIO UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL - FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF CEARA

Background

It is essential to know the profile of patients hospitalized in a specialized service given its importance for planning of preventive and curative actions, as well as to reduce the hospitalization time and avoid possible complications and unnecessary expenses to the Brazil´s Unified Health System (SUS).

Materials and methods

A descriptive and retrospective study was realized to analyze the information contained in the medical records of patients hospitalized at the Rheumatology Service of the Walter Cantídio University Hospital (WCUH) from January 2017 to January 2018, in order to characterize the clinical- epidemiologic profile of these patients, as even the main factors that interfere in hospitalization time.

Results

The clinical-epidemiological profile of patients hospitalized in the Rheumatology infirmary of the WCUH is predominantly female and of SLE patients, and the main cause of these hospitalizations is the activity of the underlying disease and infections, with the skin being the main focus. We can also observe that the most prevalent comorbidity was HAS, followed by DM, probably influenced by the chronic use of corticosteroids to control the disease. Most of the patients came from the WCUH Rheumatology outpatient clinic. The mean length of stay in the hospital was 15 days, and the factors responsible for the prolongation of the hospitalization time were the patient's own intercurrences, delays in opinions/ consultations and problems with exams.

Conclusions

Despite some obstacles during hospitalizations, such as the lack of materials to perform imaging and laboratory tests, as well as procedures and medications, (these problems are part of any institution that has SUS as a management system) our service obtained a good resolution of the cases, due in part to the availability of other methods of diagnosis and treatment. Through the data collected by this work, it is possible to infer that the Rheumatology of WCUH is a service of reference and excellence at Ceará state and despite the overload treatment, they are performed with extreme competence and responsibility towards their users.
