Title
PATIENT’S MINDSET WHEN FACING VACCINE DECISION MAKINGON A TERTIARY CENTER
Background
Although it is known that vaccine can eradicate serious infectious disease, anti-vaccine movement has grown around the world. This scenario may be a serious problem in patients with rheumatic diseases who need immunosuppressants use
Materials and methods
This is a cross sectional study which used a discourse analysis methodology. Patients who had being treated in the same hospital for at least 12 months were included. Patients were randomly invited to participate on a face-to-face tape recorded interview. The interviewees were medical students and were previously trained for the encounter. A questionnaire was applied in the day of physician’s appointment in the facility. The questionnaire had an open question format. Afterword, the speeches were written and the responses were categorized
Results
70 people were approached. Of them, 10 refused to participate because they had no interest or had no understanding of the vaccines matter. Six interviews were discarded because they were not patients. The age range of the participants varied between 15-88 years, being 37 women and 17 men. About 60% of the interviewees had complete vaccination cards. Of these 54 interviewed patients, 20% frequented the rheumatology clinic. The answers were categorized as “negative perspective” and “positive perspective”. Social media, newspaper or formal notices did not appear in their discourse. We found that for both positive and negative perspectives, beliefs and “others” opinions were the drive of the discourses
Conclusions
The discourse analyzed showed that patient’s mindset was built by common sense opinion. Understanding their point of view, health education strategies may be framed to attend their values with empathy. This study can be a platform for the development of decision aids for shared decision making on vaccine
