Title
AN EPIDEMIOLOGICAL OVERVIEW OF RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS AND OTHER POLYARTHROPATHIES IN BRAZIL THE LAST 10 YEARS.
Background
INTRODUCTION: Arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that primarily affects joints. Polyarthritis affects more than 5 joints the same time, creating an extensive inflammatory reaction in the body. Moreover, this type of pathology directly interferes with the daily routine of the patients, even leading to their disability. This way, it is mandatory that the medical team early diagnose and treat this condition in order to reduce its impact on the independence of the patients.
Materials and methods
METHODOLOGY: Epidemiological, descriptive and retrospective study, whose data was collected from Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS) from January/2009 to January/2019 by analyzing the variables: age group, geographic region, deaths, hospitalization and mortality rate.
Results
RESULTS: According to DATASUS, there were there were 61,618 hospitalizations in the Southeast region and 48,160 hospitalizations in the Northeast region. In the Center-west there were 13,927 hospitalizations and, in the North, there were 20,638 ones. There were 381 deaths reported in the Southeast region. The Northeast presented 321 deaths; South presented 188 deaths, the Center-west presented 107 fatalities and the North presented 50 fatalities. It was observed that the number of deaths was greater among women (549) than among men (498). In relation to mortality rate, the larger proportion was observed in the Center-west region: 0.84%. In the other regions we have: Northeast with 0.73%, North with 0.26% and South with 0.58%. For men, the mortality rate was 0.65%, while, for women, it was 0.62%. In relation to age group, there was a progressive increase in the mortality rate for advancing age: the highest mortality rate was for those who were 80 years old or older: 3%. From 70 to 79 years old, the rate was 1.28%, while the lowest rate was observed in the group of people from 10 to 14 years old: 0.23%.
Conclusions
CONCLUSION: The Southeast was the region that presented the greatest number of hospitalization (61,618) and, in sequence, we have Northeast (48,160). The Center-west presented the smallest number of hospitalizations (13,927). About deaths reported, the Northeast is the region which presented the greatest number of fatalities (321) and, in sequence, we have the South (188), while the North is the region which presented the smallest number of deaths (50). The Center-west presented the highest mortality rate (0.84%) and the North presented the lowest one (0.26%).
